Femslash Vidshow (Hug a Woman With Your Legs) Recs (I truly rec all of these vids. There's not a single one I didn't enjoy and love. I tried to pull together as varied choices as I could, so please enjoy.)

In femslash things can be more fun, more complicated, more adorable, more colorful, over the top, but never sated. Where fear and propaganda can meet. Sometimes it's sad and sweet, sometimes it needs to be created or seen from a different angle. They can be separated by glass, separated by death, always in our hears, like a fairytale that was fated to be cut together from different parts to become something new.

1. Scarlett North-Cavanaugh's It Keeps Getting Better (Multi) - This is actually framed as an advertisement, but I really like how it showed current femslash relationships in the media today.
2. elipie's The Way We Get By (Broad City) - This is my jam. I love this show, this couple, this vidder, this everything.
3. shati's We Are Complicated (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - There's such a distinct understanding of Faith/Buffy. The nuances in the movement within the vid is great.
4. kitty's Don't Let Me Fall (Yes or No) - So adorable. I already have the source on my must see list. So adorable and sweet.
5. kiki_miserychic's I Do Adore (Adventure Time) - Self-rec, I know, but Princess Bubblegum and Marceline are so cute and in love. I'd originally started this for cherryice's festivid treat, but ended up rewatching the whole show instead of making the deadline.
6. sweetestdrain's Let Me Put My Love Into You (Bitch Slap) - How could I not include some exploitive and over the top awesome? Too good.
7. The Cylon Vidding Machine (beccatoria, metatxt, cyborganize, and heyiya)'s The Enemy Within PSA (Battlestar Galactica) - Funny and creepy at the same time. With boobs. My faves.
8. milly's Wonder (Once Upon a Time) - Breaks my heart when I think of Mulan. WEEE CCCOOOOULLD OFFF HHAAAADD IIITTT AAAAALLLLLLLL.
9. niyalune's Mrs. and Mrs. Blake (Teen Wolf) - Beautifully constructed trailer for underused characters (Jennifer and Kali). Epic as all hell.
10. anoel's Ready or Not (Faking It) - Another vid that made me seek out the source after watching. So cute and sad and adorable.
11. ghost_lingering's Signs (Dark Angel) - I adore this vidlet and everything that it is. Original Cindy was FORMATIVE for me.
12. zeppie9294's Let Her Go (The Last of Us) - So heartbreaking and wonderful.
13. fray_adjacent's Everywhere (Xena: Warrior Princess) - I think there's a guideline somewhere that femslash vidshows should have Xena in them and this vid is perfection.
14. FenrirsLittleSister's I Was Married (The Little Mermaid and Aladdin) - I'm so glad I was able to include this vid. The way the sources were put together and the storyline achieved fill me with joy. It's like taking something from childhood and reconstructing it into something new.
15. beccatoria and chaila's Hands Away (Fringe/Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) - I knew I had to have this vid in my femslash vidshow. Come on, look at it. It's skillfully made and I bought into the premise immediately.
16. hollywoodgrrl and ohvienna's Vitalum Vitalis (American Horror Story: Coven) - When they sent it to me, I watched it and cried so hard. I thought they were going to "fix" the ending with Cordelia and Misty Day... It's their fault that I didn't have a happy ending femslash vidshow. Those assholes (ilu tho).

Alternate Universe Final Vid for Those Who Long for Happy Endings: jarrow's I Wanna Dance (Glee) - Dancing Lesbians! Be good to yourself and be converted to Faberry and Brittana.

A special thank you to those vidders who kindly allowed me to use their work and those who created premieres. You are brilliant unicorns and I treasure you like pancakes.

Curated for WisCon (wiscon_vidparty) 2014, "Dessa" - Collection of vids with music from Dessa.

Dessa is a writer, spoken word artist, rapper, and singer with work that contain narratives of female self-reliance. With the lens of feminist science fiction in mind, I curated a list of vids that meld with her unique wit and flow to exemplify the multiple media narratives available in our vidding world.

1. giandujakiss's Seamstress (Nikita)
2. isagel's Skeleton Key (Person of Interest)
3. astartexx's Matches to Paper Dolls (The X-Files)

Also, how freaking brill is this poster for the vid discussion by Jack Shoegazer? The answer is very.

And I'm linking to the Thank Heaven for Little Girls Playlist - WisCon 2013 from last year (Collection of vids about little girls: their protectors, their victims, their worlds, their families, their missions, their deaths...)

Originally I had intended to include addition vids, but needed to cull the playlist for length, repetitions, and stricter adherence to themes. These vids were not included in the playlist, I did want to provide links for others.

chaila's The Crow (Luther)
milly's Mineshaft (Game of Thrones)
genusshrike's In the Bullpen (Avengers)

Valentine's Day is a day for pathetically funny love stories, right? I was going to post about something that happened last week, but I still don't know what's going on, so have one from high school instead.

The most pathetically funny love related stories I have is one that revolved around my senior prom that I have still never told anyone about. I had been friends with a boy since 1st grade and he asked me to prom. I had only considered him in a romantic sense in passing, but figured I should give it a go so I would have a date. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense until I'd completely bought into the idea of us being together. I'd convinced myself that I was in love with him in about 7 seconds.

Our relationship stayed pretty much the same except for more flirty talk. The next day, which was two days before prom he told me during our mutual art class that he had might have to work on prom night and couldn't go. I told him it was ok and thought nothing of it except that it was unfortunate.

When my group arrived on our party bus (it was 2005 it was a new thing), we walked in with another group that had some of my friends in it as well. One of them hugged me and over her shoulder I saw him. He was there as my friend's date. I had to pretend like nothing was strange and told no one what happened because I felt mortified. Later in the night she ended up telling people how they'd gotten together. I did the math and he'd asked her the day before he'd asked me, but she had said she needed to think about it because someone else had asked her already. Then she told him the day before prom that she'd go with him and dumped the other guy. It seemed obvious that he'd asked me because he figured she was going with the other guy, then he lied about having work so he could go with her. What didn't make sense is that we were all friends and he knew I'd see him there.

When we were next in art class together neither one of us spoke whereas before we were always joking and being obnoxious together. After two days of silence I knew I didn't want to end the year that way. Instead of talking to him, I just moved across the room. Thankfully my art teacher knew I was a stone-cold weirdo and let me move my work station with the flimsy excuse that I wanted a less distracting environment when I really wanted to be far away from the lying liar. We never spoke again. I went on to do some deviant things that prom night.

It only took 12 hours, but I've watched ALL THE FESTIVIDS.

Postpone The Bad (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) - Wow, I love the way they used the screens and clips of mundane things. The moment at :30 is freaking perfect and I love it.
Who Are You, Defenders of the Universe (The Americans) - I love the editing style and clip choices, how the similarities are pulled together and pulled apart. I want to be in a fake marriage that grows into something real with this vid.
Paper Planes (Bandidas) - Without having seen the movie, I think it's a super cute bank robbers BFF movie because this vid is a super cute band robbers BFF movie and I love it. I'm totes watching this movie.
All Be Yours (Big) - So fun and so sad at the same time. I'm never going to grow up.
I Am The Rain (Brave) - I absolutely adore this little vid. It captures the spirit of the movie amazingly well.
Black Flowers (Call the Midwife) - I wasn't expecting to become so invested in the vid because I've not watched the source. But this vid so very well edited and doesn't hold back any emotional punches.
Battle Without Honor or Humanity (Danger 5) - A parody of a parody. Kill Hitler.
Get Close (Deep Blue Sea) - MINE MINE MINE SHARK SHARK SHARKSSSSSS! Awesome music choice. And I love the transitions too!
Ah Ha (Deep Blue Sea) - Excellent use of action and shocking moments with the music. SHARKSSSS!
Gasoline (Live Free of Die Hard) - I love it. I can't read this as anything other than Matt Farrell/John McClane. The flirting was strong with those two. I need to see if there's any new fics on AO3. IT'S A FIRE!!!!! sale.
Applause (Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23) - I didn't know how much I wanted to see this vid until I watched it because it's really the perfect song for James van der Beek and Chloe.
Who Are You, Really? (Dredd) - Excellent pacing and clip choice. It really melds nicely with the music.
Get Me Bodied (The Fifth Element) - This is epic and fantastic!
All We Got (The Great Gatsby) - Fabulous editing and heartbreak and pacing.
221B And A Half (The Great Mouse Detective) - I really like the use of narration.
Love, Save the Empty (Masters of Sex) - An interesting look at the relationship between Lillian and Virginia that put a doopey grin on my face.
L.O.V.E (Much Ado About Nothing) - So adorable and cute that I went into a coma.
World Spins Madly On (New Amsterdam) - Interesting manipulation of time for a show that was cancelled in the middle of the story.
Further On (Northern Exposure) - I'd forgotten how much I loved this show. I remember so much of it, but then I watched the vid and realized I'd forgotten so much.
#timeangels (NTSF:SD:SUV::) - Cool fake trailer.
Keep Your Picture Clear (Pacific Rim) - Very cool lyrics matches. The vid has a stuttery cool vibe that I dig.
Final Round (Pariah) - Tension filled beginning and a beautifully created climax. I need to rewatch this movie.
Diva Swing (RPF - A.J. Lee (WWE)) - Excellent editing and a really interesting "behind the scenes" origin style ending.
What I Like About You (RPF - Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis) - OMG, this is hilarious fun.
Gorgeous (RPF - Hugh Jackman) - I'm seriously intrigued by this vid because I haven't seen 95% of where the clips came from. It's insane and Hugh Jackman LOVES to dance.
(You Drive Me) Crazy (Sharknado) - My life is complete.
Moonlight (Sleepy Hollow) - I love the atmosphere created with the clips and the music.
The Way Things Are (Sleepy Hollow) - Wow, great song choice that leads from a harsh opening into something more painful and emotional. JENNY!
The Ballad of Wesley Crusher (Star Trek - Next Generation) - Whoa, unexpected sadness on my face. The passage of time was beautifully shown.
Paradise Circus (Stoker) - It's a good thing I didn't finish my own because it would have been like this, but less amazing. The parallels and musicality are brilliant.
Young and Beautiful (The Tudors) - Wow, I didn't realize the thread that was being pulled until it shifted from Catherine and I freaking fell in love with the concept.
No Church in the Wild (The Tudors) - DAYUM, the imagery and connections and lyrics matches and everything is so freaking perfect.
Freedom at 21 (The White Queen) - EVERYTHING IS MAGGIE B. OMFG, this is everything I wanted in a Red Queen vid but didn't ask for. The imagery and editing is fantastic. The switch over to the White Queen is amazing. I can't believe how serious and beautiful this is. OMFG.
Dutch (The Wire) - Mmmmm, such good music choice. Love the use of hands and the lyrics. The throughline of money and power is brilliant. The editing is amazing and I love it all.
Song 9 (Wonderfalls) - Great use of the animals and I like the back and forth editing.

5 - Enter the Circus (MirrorMask) - It's going to be a bumpy ride to the other side.

February, March, April

18 - When I am Laid in Earth (Utopia) - He named his daughter Jessica Hyde. Jessica. Hyde.

25 - Après Moi (Person of Interest) - After Samantha Shaw, comes the flood.

June and July

20 - That's Life (Barefoot in the Park) - Frozen skinny Bratter lovers found on 10th street, 6th floor.

20 - Who Needs Sleep? (Elementary) - Forget Sherlock, Irene, and Moriarty. Forget being a sober companion and a consulting detective. Joan Watson just wants to get some sleep.

21 - All I Need (Superatural) - Four times Dean Winchester’s loved ones overcame mind control for him.

September, October, November

7 - Endure and Survive (Teen Wolf) - Sterek zombie AU.

Total of 7 vids, 4 of which are under 2 minutes and could be considered vidlets... What's the definition of a vidlet these days? In my mind the length doesn't always equate vid vs. vidlet. Hmmm.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
When I am Laid in Earth. I was playing with connecting clips going from frame to frame. Like trying to manipulate the viewers' eyelines. Utopia is a beautifully screwy show and I think I captured a lot of that. The visuals of the show were gorgeous and I loved pulling together things within frame and moving them around. Plus, Jessica Hyde is an interesting character and I can't wait to see what happens in season two. Blood dripping from a severed down a toilet paper dispenser in a public bathroom is the most beautiful images I saw in 2013.

Least favorite
All I Need only because I feel like I could have done more to even out the visual source. I used episodes that span across seasons where the look of the show changed tremendously. The earlier seasons are dark and moody with sparse color and the recent seasons are BRIGHT AS THE SUN by comparison. I have two Supernatural vid ideas that I really, really want to do once I get the last few clips to make my points, but I do not look forward to trying to make the visual menu balanced.

Most successful
Who Needs Sleep? simply because elipie and some others got what I was going for, but I genuinely did not expect. I find that if I expect no one to understand what I was going for, I'm super happy when someone does get it. Lower expectations is where it's at.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
Endure and Survive because I love zombies and I think that everyone else should too. I quite like how the black and white turned out with all the different sources. It melds perfectly with the fic storyline. I suppose not many people could thoroughly enjoy it without reading the fic, but IDGAF because I love me some zombie!AU.

Video with single sexiest moment
Après Moi. There's a moment at about 2:12-2:20 where Sarah Shahi's character, Shaw, is advancing in a series of clips, which is sexy as hell. Shaw could kill you or kiss you and you won't know until after she's done it. I am so into the Shaw and Root dynamic on Person of Interest that I'm actually writing kinky fic of them. I rarely write fic, so it's huge that I'm actually trying for sexy times.

Biggest vid fail
Enter the Circus because I didn't remember to post the signed version online until I went to do this meme. Oops. I also failed at posting recs to livejournal. I did a few on twitter and posted all of my vividcon recs to livejournal though.

Hardest video to make
Endure and Survive because the different sources were a pain for me technically. I had trouble evening out the black and white and contrast and levels for everything. I can stand back and look at it and see a few things that I didn't balance enough, but I had a deadline for the Teen Wolf Big Bang and I'm very happy with what I made. It's strange for me to say that about a vid, so I'm obviously happy with it.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
That's Life. Barefoot in the Park is one of the first non-children's movies I ever got to see. That and Silence of Lambs and Leprechaun II, but that's a different story. Movies and tv had a large influence on my development. The tv show Mad About You and Barefoot in the Park formed what I thought a romantic relationship was supposed to be along with my personal examples in my young little life. I think Jane Fonda's character, Corie, was one of the first, if not the original Manic Pixie Girlfriend. I'm amazed that I understood what was going on in the movie, which is basically a newly married couple's first fight that escalates to the point where they're "trapped" in their "apartment." Trying to look at it objectively, I think this movie is part of the reason why I go for the Paul Bratter type and the Corie Bratter type in my personal life, which makes it telling.

Things I've learned
I think I did better with the technical aspects of vidding this year (this is when compared to my previous years and not the epic awesome skills of others). I learned how to chop off the letterboxing once I've rendered my vid. I started rendering my vids uncompressed with square pixels, then putting them into virtualdub to fix the frame if needed, and popping them into autogk. I think that's working out...

I learned some more about tumblr and vidding by researching for the tumblr section of the Vividcon 2013 Infinite Diversity in Vidding Combination Panel. It's like a rabbit hole that sucked me in and gave me thousand of new thoughts and new ways to think. And continues to do so today. I absolutely love how helpful tumblr can do for organizing vid time lines. With certain vids I'm able to pull gifs into the timeline as a placeholder for actual video clips into funnel them in.

Things to work on
Last year I said, "I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty." I think I failed partly on that, but I've expanded myself a bit more and want to continue trying. The ideas I've had for 2014 vids have evolved a bit from violent women ideas, more of a different angle on the characters I enjoy. Last year I also said, "This year I'm going to focus on making vids that have higher quality video instead of lower quality for artistic reasons that make them muddy." I think I accomplished this one for the most part. I always struggle with technical stuff, but this year was better than most for fixing those problems.

In the past I've tried to be more subdued in my vidding and I've tried to widen my window of vid ideas. I think this year I want to try considering the audience more to stretch myself. I started caring very little about what people thought about my vids, which is freeing. I'd like to make one vid this year where I actually vid for an audience. I made my festivids with this in mind, so I'm getting a head start on it.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
I considered only making vids for cons this year, but I find that to do more limiting than I want. Instead I'll say that I want to make vids for Vividcon, Wiscon, and VidUKon. Anything else on top of those is icing.

Resolutions for 2014
Again, I want to go to VVC and hope that my school doesn't have another in-service on the dates. I e-mailed by supervisor about the dates. Driving to Chicago after a day of boring meetings sucked HARD and I will not be doing that ever again. I won't know if I have a job next year for a while. I'll probably be riffed again along with the whole department, which isn't a positive outlook. I'll have to find another job, so I don't know if I'll be able to enjoy myself at VVC if I'm thinking in the back of my mind that I need to find another job.

I was made of epic fail and didn't properly send the e-mail for VVC about putting together a femslash vidshow with lots of premieres, so I'm trying again this year... maybe. I'm going to make suggestion of some vidshows I'd curate for Wiscon again this year. I really enjoyed curating the Thank Heaven for Little Girls Playlist in 2013.

I want to continue filling up my vidding journal. (I find an old one I started years ago, lost, found it, lost it again, found it, lost it, and found it again, which I need to scan pages from for laurashapiro from last year's meme.)

I need to be more social online too. I'm so bad at that. I always feel like I'm trying to hard to be friends with people, like this:

And in addition:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. Anything you might like to know about how I made a vid, I shall do my best to answer.

Strangely, my family broke the tradition of buying gifts for everyone this year. During Thanksgiving we select names for Secret Santa to go along with our usual gift giving, but this year we had a heated argument with one of my sisters complaining that the other sister and her husband give people one present as a couple, which she declared as unbalanced. I should explain that my two sisters are biologically my mother and my aunt, but my grandparents raised me, so I refer to them as my sisters. My sisters who are well beyond an age where whining about the unfairness of Christmas gifts at the dinner table is cute. Try in their early 50s, while I am 27, but we all act 12 when we're together.

This argument occurred in hushed voices as the husband was in the bathroom. My married sister joined in with the complaints, revealing that her husband doesn't contribute to Christmas shopping. This is a second marriage for both of them and they keep their finances separate. Married sister had been bottling up resentment over the years about her husband receiving gifts from everyone in the family along with thanks for the ones he had no part in giving. I'd already picked up things here and there before Thanksgiving, but everyone else wanted to forgo gift giving altogether. The husband returned from the bathroom and was told the new holiday plan of getting together for dinner without the pretense of exchanging gifts. Everyone repeated the previous secret conversation, earning imaginary Oscars. I explained that I always get Dad a gift card for McDonald's because my parents go there before the crack of dawn on Mondays to drink coffee with a group of people from church. Everyone agreed that Mom gives people passive aggressive gifts, attempting control through subtle means. She gives me cooking equipment even though I have no desire to learn cooking, she gives my married sister make up even though she doesn't like wearing it, and she gives my other sister something exercise related (while making thinly veiled comments on how she should be married by her age). Dad admitted that he simply hands everyone wads of cash and puts gas in their car like a full tank fairy godfather.

Days later my married sister sent a text message saying that she'd changed her mind and wanted to do gifts, then sent another an hour later to change it back, then sent one two days later to change it back again. My mom finally put her foot down and said no gifts, but later told me that she'd gotten some gifts already from her and Dad. I asked my sisters, who fessed up to getting gifts as well. The end result will be a Christmas where everyone is getting and giving gifts except for one person. I'm patiently waiting for the moment after dinner when gifts are given out and an awkward silence takes over as everyone else figures out what is happening.

I'm conforming and doing the Topic-A-Day meme because I haven't used my livejournal for actual journaling purposes in a long time.

I will legit answer any question, so make them as random and weird as you want. Or ask normal questions. Vidding, personal things, fannish things, anything. There is next to nothing I find offensive or off limits, so ask away.

I signed up for Galentine's Day is a multifandom fanfiction exchange specifically for stories focusing on the plethora of fantastic and often underrepresented female characters in our favorite fandoms.

Instead of a traditional Dear Author Letter, I'm going to link to a few things I've enjoyed that could inspire a fic. I know it's not typical, but I tried writing one the usual way and couldn't do it.

Requested Fandoms, in no particular order:
American Horror Story: Coven
Teen Wolf

All images are behind the cut, some images link back to more, and some links nsfw.

Dear Festividder,

I am easy/hard...
Adventure Time [TV] - Anything.
Bob's Burgers [TV] - Anything, but a family vid would be nice.
Deep Blue Sea (1999) [Movie] - Anything.
The Fades [TV] - Anything.
Raising Hope [TV] - Anything.
Workaholics [TV] - Anything.

As far as music, I can listen to anything for a vid.

Thank you.

Club Vivid Premieres
dualbunny's Raise Your Glass (Community) - I like how it embraces everything about the show that makes it what it is. It's like the show was boiled down and poured into the vid.

sweetestdrain's Notorious (Spartacus: War of the Damned) - I'm a sucker for marching in beat to the music. And for writhing bodies. And for bloody gore. And for gender non-conformity in lyric use.

bananainpyjamas's Dance Alarm (Final Fantasy XIII) - OMG, the division of mashed up voices was funny and effective.

frayadjacent's Tightrope (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - I'm totally biased in LOVING this vid because I helped beta it. And I adore it to pieces. I adore the visuals that were added and there's great care in how the vid was made, if that makes sense. Like, I can tell that the vidder love and enjoyed it.

bradcpu & son's Firework (Sherlock Holmes) - There needs to be 100% Club Vivid vids to Kidz Bop songs because this is hilarious to me. I hope it's supposed to be delightful and fun because it makes me smile.

obsessive24's Va Va Boom (Merlin) - THIS IS A CHILDREN'S SHOW? WITH THAT MANY SEXUAL REFERENCES? WOW, I should have kept watching Merlin for the fisting jokes.

kass and laurashapiro's Scream (Doctor Who) - I love it when Club Vivid vids start out all innocent and fun, then slowly become vaguely menacing and creepifying like this.

shati's Follow Me (Chocolate) - BADASS. Netflix, here I come.

hollywoodgrrl's Smells Like Westeros Spirit (Game of Thrones) - Fuck me in a tower with all our clothes on, this has so many onion-y layers that it's new every time I rewatch it. I'm not kidding, I feel like I'm falling in a rabbit hole as I read other people comments and realize new things.

jetpack_monkey's Let's Go to the Mall (Dawn of the Dead 1978) - I bullied this vid into existence. The absurdity is beautiful. I'm going to be a dick and remix this for the remake, lol. It's a thing that I do in my head to jetpack_monkey's vids. Mine is an evil laugh.

Challenge Amenesty
bradcpu's Thrift Shop (remakes) - LOLZ, entertaining concept and great musical combination. A cinematic thrill of a vid. The "I wear your granddad's clothes" section was especially satisfying.

ghost_lingering's Shephards (Firefly & Pulp Fiction) - Again, a spoken word vid was my favorite of a vidshow. I love everything about what this vid chooses to be. The way the three back stories are essentially the same was something that I needed to see in vid form. Book, Jubal Early, and the Operative were the same piece in the game at different levels of the game so to speak, parallel to Jules in Pulp Fiction. I still remember realizing that intentional vid connection during the Challenge discussion and I felt like a genius, lol.

anoel's We Don't Care (The Wire) - I'll never get tired of vids about the kids' season on The Wire.

milly's Mineshaft (Game of Thrones) - Ros, how I love thee and how her story was woven in this vid. Dessa, how I love thee too.

sisabet and sweetestdrain's The Sellout (multifandom) - Troublesome, yet ultimately satisfying storylines, which probably says something about me as a viewer.

absolutedestiny's Age Like Wine (vidder's catalog) - Those programs look hella impressive and daunting. I love introspective and self referential things like this.

jetpack_monkey's Vividcon 2013 Premieres Intro vid (Multi) - SO CUTE.

bananainpyjamas's I'm No Superman (Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes) - I love the balance of humor and sincerity that this vid strikes. The musicality hits the perfect chord of adorableness with the movements and narrative structure.

kass' In the Hole (Ripper Street) - Well, I started watching Ripper Street (Old Timey CSI) when I started this recs post and I've already finished it before posting this. I was drawn in by the vid's sound matching with the video, like the kid throwing the rock, then the sound of glass breaking.

jetpack_monkey's Slippery Slope (The Wickerman) - Fuck me sideways. I can't really explain my love for this vid because it's so wrapped in a strange feeling of despair and dread. The use of the movie is so well done, like the slight movements within the clips. The most well known images are edited perfectly in the vid too. The reveal, MY GOD, that man's stupidity... Yes, I know people see the movie differently, but I see that man as stupid in his morality.

anoel's Past the Feeling (Once Upon a Time) - The FEELS of my heart. I don't need to watch Once Upon a Time, I just need to watch anoel's vids. The imagery is gorgeously used and the music is seamlessly woven with them. Regina's story and how her tendrils reach out into the other characters and family. The vid is almost 5 minutes long, but I wanted it to keep going and I didn't want Regina's story to end. I'm bias because I will never be over Swan Queen. I love the segmented nature of the vid and I feel like that's the only way a Regina vid could work. She's a very compartmentalized character and she's written in such bizarre ways. I'm amazed at how the vid draws things together in such a way that it makes a beautiful fairytale... At one point I remember thinking over and over "SOMEONE GIVE REGINA A HUG."

shati's Hope on Fire (Queen Seondeok) - I've watched and heard about Queen Seondeok from beccatoria so much that I feel like I've watched the show. I feel like every Queen Seondeok vid has great clip choice because of the sheer amount of source that it has, yet none of the vids I watch seem stale or repetitious. Your use of the camera motion is lovely and the balance of close up shots with larger scale scenes.

astolat's When I Ruled the World (Person of Interest) - I liked the narrative structure and the use of lyrics in relation to the characters and story lines. The use and creation of the machine sections was especially lovely.

sweetestdrain's Graceless (Spartacus) - There were two vids made with the same concept and source. I love them both differently, but for the same reasons. The progression of the narrative was beautiful and compelling. I love the tender, yet fierce love that comes through in the editing. There's an obvious beginning, middle, and end, which was so brilliantly satisfying while still breaking my heart.

echan's Omega (Fight Club) - CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH I WANT TO HAVE HATE SEX WITH THIS VID, PLEASE? Like, I would let it do the most unfathomable things to me. The use of, not only the audio, but the SOUNDS. It's music to my eyeballs. I have such a thing for the use of spoken word in vidding.

butterfly's Firework (Supernatural) - I watched a different vid than most of the people I talked to after Premieres. I saw it as Charlie being fabulous and amazing and Dean loving her like a sister (because she's not a love interest threat because she's identified as queer). Through Dean loving Charlie, he accepts his own queerness and love of Cas. Dean embraces his own self by hugging those close to him, showing his emotions, and "rejects" his previous hetero-normative characterization. I said that and everyone on my side of the hotel room looked at me like I'd grown three heads. This is how I choose to perceive this vid and it's beautiful, even if it's not the vidder's intention.

lolachrome's We're All Missing Mama (Peter Pan) - I had a doofy grin on my face during this vid and I know it, even the when it was sad.

killabeez's Dyin' Day (The Hunger Games) - The desolation, my god, the desolation.

hollywoodgrrl's Run Boy Run (Game of Thrones) - One of my favorites that I can't textually render my thoughts without cracking my head open like an e.e. cummings poem. The clips are all so important and all the character's fates are so similar. For me it was all love of the narrative, editing, song use, and the characters coming through without getting lost in it all.

joyo and absolutedestiny's Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (Infomercials) - I love this on a fannish level, of course, but also in a personal "real life" way, which added to my enjoyment. A group of friends and I play a game where if one of us yells out "person in an infomercial" that person has to finish whatever their doing in an epically and overly dramatic fashion. I've ruin so many things playing this horrible game.

findthesea's No Direction Home (Lost) - I never knew I wanted to see a Sawyer character study until I saw this vid. Having just did a rewatch of Lost (the chronological edit), I had an instant connection to it because the source was still on my mind and in my conversations. It's a rich vid with an interesting structure that I dug. First time vidders that make such great vids make me so jealous.

bradcpu and milly's The Polka Slayer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - There's wild and wide humor. It ranges and whips around, which makes it a great ride. I thought it was going to get sad for a moment, but then the funny came back and that's my favorite part.
27 August 2013 @ 09:06 pm
It's to the point where I can't remember exactly when or what I did during Vividcon weekend, but I know that I loved it. After writing that sentence I remembered that I tweeted most of the time and checked my feed, duh. I love tweeting people that are sitting in the same room as me. It's like passing notes except with style and it's only a few steps away from telepathy.

I tried to be more free flowing and not plan what I was doing everyday like I did my first year. I don't like not having plans because then it leads to situations like the break for lunch on Sunday where I'm standing there awkwardly for a moment. I considered tagging onto a group of people I knew, but I couldn't invite myself along and went to my room to charge my phone... Thankfully bradcpu came in and we went to get some food and we hung out with bananainpajamas and milly. I always remember who I hung out with late at night and who I ate with more so than the actual vids. I certainly get information and gain knowledge at the panels, but I remember more conversations than premiering vids. I end up with more homework from the con, lol. This year I didn't get to talk and hang out with all the people I'd wanted to, like frayadjacent, laurashapiro, lolachrome, my actual roommates, and others. I got home and saw con reports from people I hadn't even seen at the con.

I came in late during Club Vivid due to work and travel, but I quickly caught up by drinking 7 or 8 vodka cranberries in 45 minutes, then drinking three bottles of water. I remember everything because I am a classy drunk. Pretty sure I made horrid first impressions on the people I met for the time, like gigglemonster. She's only ever talked to me when I've been drinking. FOR SHAME. Selfishly, seeing I'm on a Boat play in Club Vivid was a crazyawesome experience that I wasn't expecting. I'm so glad it played later in the show and I got to see people get excited and enjoy dancing to the song. Sadly, I wasn't drunk enough to believe revolutionaryjo was Leslie Knope for a second like last year. I was so happy for the 2 seconds when I thought she was actually Leslie Knope that I don't care I'm a gullible drunkie. She had on a beautiful Leslie Knope wedding dress this year. Also, elipie's hair is full of secrets and I miss her now. And kuwdora. I've decided to move in with them.

I'm still bummed that I missed all the panels on Friday because I was really looking forward to the audio editing and song choice ones. I loved having lunch Saturday with morgandawn, xlorp, bradcpu, milly, and elipie was fantastic. To fit in with the group I've decided to marry elipie.

Had hilariously tragic dinner with hollywoodgrrl, ohvienna and someone who I only know their legal name and their twitter and don't want to link because a) I don't know if they link VVC to that account b) I don't know how to make the twitter link like other people and c) I'm lazy. ETA, found her, findthesea. There was much fun to had in the line for Premieres. I feel a little bad because someone might think I was laughing at them when we were walking into Premieres when I was laughing at a related situation and not at them. I have no idea who they were, but hope they don't think I was a bitch. They can think that for other reasons, but I wasn't being rude in that situation, I swear to Cher.

I was amazed that I sat still through Premieres, even though I was sure my leg jiggling and accidental laughter made ohvienna and anoel want to stab me. I love Karaoke every year and should have signed up, but I'd rather make a fool of myself with friends and I didn't harass anyone to sign up with me this year.

The room party was lovely. You know it's VVC when someone asks if you're going to a party that's in your room by someone (ua_the_terrible) that doesn't know it's your room. I had the best room and roommates at VVC. Especially the sleeping shenanigans like when bradcpu went into the bathroom, milly left our bed for his, then bradcpu crawled in my bed to snuggle milly without realizing it was me. Then I apologized because I thought I was at home and he was Dan. I have a habit of grabbing his arm and making him into a human blanket. I'm secretly clingy and needy when I'm sleepy, who knew? I think Dan is a lying liar. Another night I accidentally watched bananainpyjamas sleep because I was trying to figure out which bed I had to get in and she woke up with a yelp. I told her it was a dream and she went back into her cocoon and I suffocated my laughter in the pillow. Stories to tell my grandchildren.

I had a great time being a leech on jetpack_monkey and ohvienna's conversation about film. I had no idea there was a MASH movie. I thought it only a tv show. I found out later that Methos was only in 8 Highlander episodes. I feel like my whole life has been a lie. After the room party I couldn't fall asleep, so I dicked around on Twitter under the covers because I am a polite roommate when it comes to annoying technology. bananainpyjamas probably thinks I was doing something else under the covers, but never said anything, lol.

Vid Review seemed quick compared to last year, but was full of various LOLZ. I'm sitting in the back for Challenges from now on. That's where the cool people sit because you can watch everyone else's reactions that they think no one else sees. I think the people watching opportunities at VVC are vastly overlooked. Hung out with hollywoodgrrl, ohvienna, and aforementioned cool person whose LJ I don't know ETA, found her, findthesea before they went to the airport because I'm codependent.

I am a ridiculous person and there's a moment in Fiasco, about midway through, when shit gets real and things go from crazy to crazyawesome. This year I literally cried. Not figuratively. I literally cried real tears because I was an FBI agent (administrative assistant promoted to field agent) that was on a case way above my pay grade and I was in over my head trying to protect the planet while my guts hung out. Sure jetpack_monkey, bradcpu, and milly were there and were amazing too, but I want my Oscar. Went to jspencer1986's lovely concert. Hung out with NC until we found a room that still had people, namely par_avion, talitha78, geekturnedvamp, aruan, which was lovely because I hadn't interacted with them much last year. I totally googled "female alpha penis" afterward.

Monday morning I hung out in the lobby and had great conversations with thuviaptarth, echan, anoel, serrico, and others. I didn't realize until much later that serrico was serrico and not Sarah Co. My reaction to meeting serrico would have been much more excited than my reaction to meeting Sarah Co, which was being polite and searching her name on LJ on the sly. I am a failure. Grabbed some Thai and ended up driving around Chicago, shopping, and seeing random things. Had the best hot chocolate I've ever had. And I enjoy the fuck out of a hot chocolate. Indiana turnpike rest stop McDonald's have the worst Sweet Teas. I'm writing off the entire state.

This year I forgot to pack pajama pants and slept in boyshorts I must have packed in my procrastination haste. I kept waiting for someone in the room to comment, but I now realize they probably expected me to walk around half naked in a Grinch t-shirt or one that said "World's Coolest Mom."

Glitterguts! (Desensitisation encomium)
absolutedestiny's I Fink U Freeky (90s Japanese erotic cyberpunk body-horror movies including 946 Pinocchio (1991), Rubber's Lover (1996) and Tetsuo: The Iron man (1989)) - I really enjoyed this. The movements within the frame along with the sounds in the music and the arrangements of images are fantastic.

jetpack_monkey's A Quite Serious Thematic Analysis of the Works of David Cronenberg (The films of David Cronenberg) - I love how director study vids bring out all sorts of terrifying parallels in the sources. They're utterly captivating visuals and they're made even more so apparent when placed together and intercut by the editing.

Brand New Classic Hits
cupidsbow's We Must Be Killers (The Defiant Ones) - I connected emotionally to the characters far more than I thought and more than I usually connect to unknown source in a vid.

hollywoodgrrl's The Amazing Sounds of Orgy (Replusion) - This is what going mad feels like.

Kitovraska's Loneliness (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty) - Wow, love the additional line and text in this. It's constructed well, without feeling like it went for cheap moments to create the romance between Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

A Matter of Perspective
obsessive24's Blinding (Merlin) - DAYUM. I love the building pressure. Having heard the song tons of times before, I knew what was coming musically and I couldn't wait to see what the vidder did it with. OBVI, I was not disappointed. Excellent epic emotional zoom SKILLZ, breathing, and the happy little orange bit made my heart hurt.

heresluck's How I Got Over (The Wire) - Expertly accomplished study of Michael, Namond, Randy, Dukie, and those around them. I still get emotional about how well the vid follows their stories down their respective rabbit holes.

keely's Sugar (Smallville) - Still amazed at how this vid was able to construct Lana Lang as an actual character that doesn't depend on who she's with and not just a plot device.

Video Game Vids
milly's Riverside (Tomb Raider 2013) - Putting aside the issues I have with the game itself, this is a deeply emotionally sound and mapped out vid.

Zup's Dopest Dope You've Ever Seen! (Battlefield 3, Blacklight Retribution, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, Medal Of Honor) - The title really does say it all.

UFец's Paper Planes (Borderlands 2) - I love that it doesn't take itself seriously, even though it could have gone that direction. There's humor throughout.

Hamps's Warrior Concerto (Assassin's Creed) - This has always been one of my favorite videogame vids because it ties so many things together, while staying visually fresh to death.

gef's de:part (Alan Wake) - The atmosphere is created beautifully with the aide of the visual and music choices. The editing falls into sync with the music without being too predictable.

evi's evo (Deus Ex: Human Revolution) - I envy the way it moves and navigates through the source.

Also Premiering (Non-attending premieres)
obsessive24's Devil Wouldn't Recognize You (Elementary) - Very cool use of the coloring and added effects clips overtop. I especially love how Sherlock ripping down just his portraits seems more important than in the source when it's paired with the other uses of art in the vid. Love the choppy, yet obviously purposeful editing.

1. Comment with "I got drunk and bought a ton of flowers"
2. I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

My questions, from fray_adjacent12:

1. How did you get into vidding?
I started out as a viewer and then thought "hey, I could do that better" and taught myself how to vid. It's a complete rude and mean way to find a hobby. My early vids are shitty, but I had a lot of fun figuring things out, like how to write my own XMLs in Windows Movie Maker to create custom effects. Brad made an awesome vidder profile of me that I usually link people to when they ask about what got me into vidding because it explains how I wanted to vid before I actually knew there was something called vidding.

2. What vids of yours should I watch if I am squicky about gory and/or sexual violence?
There's not a lot because there's usually some level of gore, but here are some from 2009 to now. :)
Long, Long Time Ago- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/214436.html
He Called Me Baby- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/214669.html
MoneyGrabber- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/215080.html
Bright Star- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/210094.html
Somewhere Only We Know- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/210824.html
I'm on a Boat- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/170402.html
Betterman- http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/184533.html

3. You once mentioned that you "want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty." How is that going?
For last year I wanted to be more subdued, which I think I did. This year I wanted to change the way I decide what to vid, which is different than changing how I vid. Looking at my current timelines I've widened my window of vid ideas, but my current vid timeline (for WisCon) is my typical sort of vid for a female character. It has a different angle than usual, but it is mainly a female asskicker (Samantha Shaw on Person of Interest).

4. What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of your job?
Teaching preschool isn't easy, but I love it. And being an Intervention Specialist isn't easy, but I love it. My least favorite aspect is probably the paperwork. I'm not very organized and I'd rather be teaching than calculating percentages on IEP goals. My favorite part is everything else. When a child with autism started talking again, when a child with cerebral palsy stopped needing to use their walker, and basically when a child does anything that they couldn't before. I don't even mind when they headbutt me in the jaw or scratch my face. It sounds strange, but it doesn't faze me at all and I love it.

5. Is there a story behind your default icon, and if so, what?
I saw the photo, which is an ad for Kate Spade and it instantly felt like it captured something of myself. It's hard to explain without showing you the inside of my brain.

#ruined by kings and now ruiner of kings #honestly do you know how much potential this film would have had as a real examination of queenship/femininity in a patriarchal world? #the answer is a lot #it could have been utterly breathtaking and amazing and ridiculously on point #if they had used beauty as a repeated motif - because yes yes ravenna is right #because queens are figureheads who rarely get to rule; because women are judged on what they look like #and so in a world like that - to take power; to take true power #you have to use your weakness and fashion it into your strength #so yes yes beauty is power #cosmetics and physical appearance as an extension of the will #’as strong as an arm’ #and beauty is how ravenna conquers but faith is how snow conquers #it could have been amazing as an examination of the two different forms of queenship #ravenna who uses her very self as a weapon against the world and snow #who had been forged by the world and comes back in armour with no pretensions to feminine beauty or tradition #to take the throne #two methods of conquest and both succeed. and in time the throne will rest as heavily on snow as it did on ravenna #jesus christ you deserved a better script

January, February, March, April, May, June

11 - I See Everything (Firefly/Serenity) - prompt (I See Everything, Firefly, River/Inara, dance)

18 - Long, Long Time Ago (Destino) - A surreal dance through the universe with a woman who loves a man. A man set free from stone to go after the woman carved in his heart.

19 - He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) - I feel so empty since he's been gone.

19 - Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) - Music without lyrics. People without faces.

20 - MoneyGrabber (Smash) - You're the one I just don't need.

21 - Dutch (Hell on Wheels) - Lily Bell, The Fair-Haired Maiden of The West

September, October, November, December

Total of 6 vids, one of which is a vidlet.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
MoneyGrabber (Smash) because it's a different vid for me. It's actually the second version because the first finished vid file was corrupted. I like how it turned out better because all the female rivalry turned into a more sexualized tension. The first version was more narratively even, but I like that Michael/Julia/Frank service as a cautionary tale in the beginning until it's time for them to go. I enjoy a good love rhombus until it's run it's track and Dev was a cheap time whore. Karen and Ivy have really good cheer sex and should role play in bed.

Least favorite
Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) because it did what I wanted it to do, which is make me uncomfortable when I watch it.

Most successful
I didn't really have a successful vid this year when measured in traditional terms, like number of comments. I approached vidding very differently this year and I was successful in eliciting certain things. In those terms, He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) was the most successful. Going to VVC for the first time I wanted to aim for one comment on a vid and if I got that comment, I met my goal. I wanted this one to break someone because I'm evil. I wasn't prepared for the weird looks after Challenges though, lolz.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I don't think any of them were "under-appreciated" simply because I made them with objectives and it doesn't bother me when people don't understand them. Until VVC I didn't fully realize how much of a minority opinion that was. If someone didn't like my vid or didn't understand it, that means it wasn't for them. I was surprised that Long, Long Time Ago (Destino) wasn't liked. I wanted to make something beautiful that I enjoyed, so I appreciate it and I overheard people saying it was beautiful, which is what I wanted.

Video with single sexiest moment
Duh, I See Everything (Firefly/Serenity) because there's actual pornography. I read up on masking tutorials and edited out The Operative. This vid was the only time it's acceptable to edit out Chiwetel Ejiofor. I played with coloring in more organic ways to match different sources. Seriously, why are people frightened by vaginas? They don't eat your soul or have teeth.

Biggest vid fail
I would say Dutch (Hell on Wheels) because I knew what I was doing wasn't going to work, but I did it anyways because I'm stubborn. I'm proud of that vidding fail though. I like it edited that way because Lily talks to fast and is the book that beat the speedreader. I love how her storyline is the more traditionally male origin story. Her husband died to give her motivation and she has visually beautiful dreams of him and his pretty eyes in fields. Hell on Wheels has flaws, but I'm well practiced in ignoring faults of a show for certain characters.

Hardest video to make
I am forever plagued with technical difficulties. ROSEBUD! I made Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) in Adobe Premiere 6.5 and I hate using that program for main editing. I like using it for "spices" when vidding primarily in Sony Vegas 11. I rendered that vid at least 50 times and I still think I messed it up in the end.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
Hmm, all of them have some level of personal issues that I leech into them, but He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) has a lot of emotional resonance for me in my real life. I stopped most of my emotional spewing on my livejournal, which is a good thing, but a couple of people would be able to watch the vid and see how telling it is.

Things I've learned
Last year I wanted to work on how to participate more and be meaningful in conversations about vidding. In my own way I did that, but I thought and talked more about vidding than I did actual vidding. I don't think I'll ever be able to talk fluidly about vidding because I don't translate the things in my head to words well. I cannot even count how many times at VVC I tried to think of a word and couldn't, stuttered for 30 seconds and gave up. I know I'm not verbally gifted, especially when it comes to something that I don't talk about, like vidding or art. I think I did ok, but probably came off like a tool.

While not strictly about vidding, I did learn that VVC is far different than what I expected. I tried to hang out with as many different people as I could. It's a lot more of a social arena than I expected. I thought it was going to be a hair-braiding, love fest and it's not. There's still rude people and people with stupid, uninformed opinions. It's exactly like a real world only with more glitter. I learned that the people I like online aren't the people I like in person and the people I dislike online aren't the people I dislike in person. That's a complicated way of saying that I learned that people didn't behave the way I expected for the better and the worse.

I also learned to look at my vidding catalog more analytically. I wrote meta this year too, Vidding as My Own Flavor of Feminism. I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty.

And obsessive24 pointed out that I've been rendering wrong my whole vidding life, which I didn't know. I am FAILBOAT.

Oh, and what I thought was clipping was really me pulling an entire movie or a tons of episodes into Sony Vegas and trimming from there. Oops. FAILBOAT REDUX.

Things to work on
I sent the wrong file into VVC for the DVDs this year, so next year I will be very careful when I'm rendering and naming so that I don't send it a file with stray frames like a douchecanoe. This year I'm going to focus on making vids that have higher quality video instead of lower quality for artistic reasons that make them muddy.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
Every time I say to myself, "self, you are going to finish this vid this year," I don't do it. I will say that I'm going to make a premiere for WisCon. (Everyone should make a premiere for WisCon.) I have a WIP in mind for a Vidukon premiere too, but I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it. I have a Doctor Who vid that would be cool for CVV and an idea for a VVC Premiere as well. With VVC Challenge being Amnesty, I want to finish an old idea for that. kuwdora saw all my WIPs, so she can't tell.

Resolutions for 2013
Go to VVC again and hope that my school doesn't have another in-service on the dates.

I am planning to put together a femslash vidshow with lots of premieres for VVC2013 if everything pans out.

I'm going to use smaller journals for vidding, which makes them portable because writing on my arms and hands is not cute at 26. That and people shouldn't be able to read "dress = power" and wonder what drugs I'm on. Plus, I feel accomplished when I finish a journal. My first vidding journal was massive and took years to fill.

I'm not kidding about this post being a Public Service Announcement for Porn. Free porn at that!

From queerporntv's tumblr:

Hey Babes!

So, this morning, tons of people hit up stores and got trampled in hopes of buying a few good items, and really ended up with a bunch of mediocre stuff and lots of lost money. Not only does this support huge corporations rather than buying locally (Go Plaid Friday!), it’s really just a big ol’ mess.

Here at Queer Porn TV, we’ve caught onto the awesome phenomena of Buy Nothing Day, and we couldn’t be more stoked. Buy Nothing Day was started as a Black Friday alternative, where for just one day, we make the effort to step back from this crazy economy, to relax, unwind, and “unshop”. For our lucky and diligent fans, YOU, that one, paying such good attention, we are making it so that today you can have your cake (pie?) and eat it, too!! That’s right, in honor of Buy Nothing Day, Queer Porn TV is offering 3 free hours of access to the site, from 9pm to midnight PST!

Aren’t you glad you’re not at Target?

From 9pm until Midnight, PST tonight!!

I am thankful for porn and you should be too. Go forth and enjoy whatever your timezone may be.

Dear Festividder,

I am easy/hard...

Action [TV] - Anything, but nothing too serious.
Alphas [TV] - Anything, but go light on the Cameron angst.
Bob's Burgers [TV] - Anything, but a family vid would be nice.
Bunheads [TV] - Anything, but I'd love a Michelle vid or a Sasha vid. I love all the characters though.
The Cabin in the Woods [Movie] - Anything
The Fades [TV] - Anything, but a gen vid would be cool.
Raising Hope [TV] - Anything, except seriousness.
Workaholics [TV] - Anything, except seriousness.

As far as music, I can listen to anything for a vid.

Thank you.
