[info]nightchik and I complied the Understanding Meta Vids (I C WHUT U DID THAR) vidshow (she ran the panel at VVC) for 2009 [info]vividcon.

Vids that exist on a meta level, working in more ways than one, often suggesting a basis beyond the individual fandoms of the source andmore about a larger concept and/or fandom itself. Vids that go beyond the narrative of their source, commenting on the nature of that narrative, connecting with outside meanings, or placing the story in alarger culture context.

Everytime I thought we had a good description I'd realize it was excluding some type of meta or possibility for meta. I had no idea how tediously difficult it would be a write a definition for what meta vids are. We went for a wide range of meta topics, so I hope people didn't look at it and reject the vidshow in the basis that it's not what they consider to be meta. Meta has a wide variety of possibilities and these vids are some of them:

On to the playlist! )

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? While this was the playlist for meta vids used in the vidshow, I encourage others to drop links in the comments to other meta vids. Feel free to spark discussions as well. I'm sure they'll be notes coming from the meta panel and I'd love for online discussion as well.

The internet is so dead you'd think it was a holiday or something.

VID RECS:
[info]giandujakiss's Believe (Supernatural) - Amazing song choice with movement that makes me want to stop blinking.
[info]giandujakiss's One War (Dark Angel) - Beautiful working of layering that adds meaning and communicates so well. The progression, structure, and focus are amazing.

[info]gigglemonster's Be My Yoko Ono (Stargate: Atlantis) - Really cute and quirky clip interaction with a natural feeling pacing.

[info]halcyon_shift's I Want to be Evil (Multi) - Great transitions and connections within multiple sources and many of my favorite characters.

[info]heyiya's Exit Music (For A Witch) (Merlin) - Excellent subversion of the show and characters. The vid has a soft feel, then the hard edges start poking out.

[info]maichan808's Kinetic (Supernatural) - Nice flow of beautifully understated images.

[info]sweetestdrain's Empty Hearts (Merlin) - Great stucture and detail to relationship that makes the vid feel like a ballet of hope for all of them.

[info]tearful_eye's Riddle in the Sky (Merlin) - Stellar editing, yet I can't really put into words how amazing this vid is. It's so rich and heavy, the weight of the visuals and music coupled with the editing and lyrics.

Ok, I've watched this video about ten times in the last two days. I have no idea exactly what makes it and Sara Schaefer so great, but I've watch it so many times that I need to pass it off to my flist: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBzOfUTGTts]

VID RECS:
[info]butterfly's Jacob Marley's Chain (Merlin) - A haunting Uther vid with simmer and barely contained emotions in the languid editing.

[info]charmax's Smile (Buffy and Angel) - BEWBS ARE KEWL in this cute and fun vid.

[info]deirdre_c's Supernatural (In My Pants) (Supernatural) - You haven't lived until you've laughed with this vid.

[info]millylicious's Pandora's Box (Heroes) - She is a sick genius and I loves it. The vid is so creepy and amazing that I want to have it's scary Elle and Sylar babies.
[info]millylicious's Soldier (Merlin) - Quiet sadness soaks this Hunith vid right along the sheer joy and beauty.

[info]obsessive24's Love Lockdown (Battlestar Galactica) - An amazing destruction and construction of Gina/Cain that uses repeated imagery to give a more full representation with limited source.

COMIC/COLLAGE:
[info]dogeared and [info]aesc's Escape Velocity (Stargate: Atlantis) - This blew my mind with creativity and innovation. It's set before 5x16 with the Vegas!verse that pays such mind to composition and interaction between text and image that I could stare it at.

VID RECS:
[info]chasarumba's Gemini (Jekyll) - The opening is very stylized and executed. The transformations, pacing, use of lush coloring, and power of the music is amazing. So many strings and threads of the series come into a cohesive movement with the music. The dynamics of the music are expressed so wonderfully. It's the 11th second and I'm sold completely, then I'm pulled in deeper. The never ending motion of "Hyde" with all the whirling and twisting of him and the camera is contrasted beautifully with the creepy stillness of him in the foyer with the boys. The vidder isn't afraid of holding on that clip and letting the composition and contextual meaning of the shot sink it. Expert use of the visual language of that episode.

lim's Sandman (Stargate: Atlantis) - Rather terrifyingly cute verging on disturbing reworking of McKay and Sheppard into a comicbook style.

[info]sockkpuppett's The Fifth Circle (Supernatural) - When I sat down to type feedback for this vid, I found myself grasping for the right phrases and platitudes. First, I view the vid as an unrealized reality. It's a look at what could and might be. It's a hypothesis, from my view, but maybe not the vidder and maybe not another viewer. The use of external footage is melded with an expert touch. The motion and connections between the disparate sources pull together to create a believable world. The mood and atmosphere is set up and the tone is conveyed within seconds of the vid. There's an ethereal quality that makes my heart ache for Sam and Dean. The contrast of dark and bright with the use of glow and layers is beautiful. I never would have thought that What Dreams May Come could be used for Supernatural, but the vidder makes me believe it wholeheartedly. As with so many of [info]sockkpuppett's vids, I find myself ill-equipped to comment because I lack the ability to express why I appreciate the vid.

A handful of long overdue VID RECS:
[info]charmax's Cry Me a River (Lost and Delirious) - Blissful editing that contains so much pain and love.

[info]gigglemonster's Breathe Me (Friday Night Lights) - With such texture and effects, it feels light, yet heavy in a meaningful way.

[info]keewick's Recessional (Dead Like Me) - Beautiful and understated editing that emphasizes the quiet motion and natural connections.

[info]kuwdora's Reinvent Yourself (Heroes) - Great motion, use of beat, and pacing.

[info]special_trille's Twist (Dexter) - A bittersweet mixture of music and source with blissful use of beat and lyrics.

[info]crickets's Karma Police (Battlestar Galactica) - After watching 4x01 of BSG, I went back to watch some Final Four vids and fell in love with this interestingly distorted and desolately disjointed (yet connected) look at the Final Four.

[info]tearful_eye's Back Then (Doctor Who) - Lovely editing style, song choice, and a killer piano section.

[info]wistful_fever's Four Years (Stargate: Atlantis) - A comprehesive and graceful exploration of Sheppard/McKay.

My friends and I were out Friday at the lamest bar known to man. It was a friend of a friends' birthday, so we took her out. Of course my stupid self didn't know her dad was the mayor of my town. I am made of epic fail. She's fun, but I wish I'd known before. That way I wouldn't have done half the things I did. It was her first time in a club so we took her to a tame one. No gay bars. :)

My grandparents are on vacation again, which means I'm cooking Thanksgiving Slapsgiving dinner for the family... If you don't hear from me it's because I burned my house down. Seriously. I didn't know it took days to defrost a turkey and I'm thinking about taking my mini-blow torch to it.

VID RECS:
[info]astartexx's Jesus Christ [alt: Wood and Nails] (Supernatural) - Every choice made by the vidder feels right from the black and white to the editing choices to the clip choice to the framing to the use of the lyrics to everything. It makes my heart squeeze tight. After this vid I think I need a hug as much as Dean does.

[info]butterfly's Digging the Heroine (Heights) - It's understated, like the movie itself. The vid weaves come of the threads from the movie together.

gwyneth and jo's I Remember (Charlie Jade) - Striking and stark visuals with a harsh mood. Don't let lack of fandom knowledge keep you away.

Eunice's And She Was (Doctor Who) - This is the Rose I remember and love.
Eunice's Don't Touch That Dial (Doctor Who) - This is my Martha.

Jessie's The River (Angel/Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Smart use of the lyrics and quick editing with the drumbeats.

[info]kazbaby's Eurydiceverse (Stargate: SG-1) - A layered and moody vid with so much under the surface.

kitty's On Top (Supernatural) - Great use of outtakes and other footage to create a cute and vaguely homicidal vid with a heart of gold.

Speranza's Lifetime Piling Up (Stargate: Atlantis) - Nice jump cutting, witty use of the lyrics, overlays, and creation of mood. It's adorable and endearing.

Amanda, some of her friends, and I went to the Carnival of Terror and it sucked big. We had to walk forever to get to the different parts and they were lame anyways. Between one of the set ups there were guys with chainless chainsaws. One of them ran it over the backs of my legs when I went by and chased me, so I started freaking out (because they aren't allowed to touch the people) screaming "you can't touch me, you cock!" To which he replied, "you know you like it."

My brain feels like bavarian jello. I simply cannot retain anything else. I have reached my limit for this semester. I'm run down to the point where I can't get concerned about things. I was so worried for my Assistive Technology midterm, but I was blaise about my SensoryMotor one. I did well on both. For so long this semester I've been overwhelmed and I think I've finally shut down and can't take anymore in.

VID RECS:
[info]_becca84_'s C'mon, C'mon (Chuck) - Well handled music and action with driving energy in the editing.
[info]charmax's deus ibi est (Supernatural) - Perfectly odd song choice, cool titles, layering, movement, use of stillness and objects, transitioning, and paralleling.
[info]charmax's Respectable (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Great song, pacing, lyrics, music, and use of linear storytelling.
dayln's Lay Me Down to Sleep (Battlestar Galactica) - Extremely pretty effects, layers, coloring,
di's Windmill, Windmill (House) - Way cool color, effects, pacing, clip choice, and editing that comes together in a sea of awesomeness.
[info]greensilver's Ohh (Dante's Cove) - Makes bad tv look good.
[info]jescaflowne's Another Sunday (Stargate: Atlantis) - Crazy fun that's this side of awesome.
[info]sol_se's Halloween (Heroes) - I love this flipping vid for the editing and subtle effects.

I’ve finished my summer student teaching and I start at Ashland University in the fall. I cannot believe it. I still have to wait for financial aid to come in, but I can’t believe how fast college is going by. It’s insane.

The 15th I took my Civilization I final and I barely recognized some of the questions, so I was freaked out for a few days. I was worried I was going to have to take the class over again and I actually lost some sleep over it. Grades were released online Friday and I got As in Introduction to Ecology, Child Guidance and Management, Fundamentals of Music, and… Civilization I. I got a B in Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, but I’m proud of that one because the professor was dreadful and we all had to teach ourselves. I can’t believe I actually got an A in Civ though.

Lib went to the doctor today because we’ve both been sick for more than a week and she thinks we’ve have a parasite and we’re going to die. I refused to go, but I said if she goes and it’s serious, then I’ll go in. I think we just have salmonella or something, which is not a happy thought. I can’t stay healthy lately.

Now that I’m not freaking out needlessly over grades, I can get on with the relaxing rec-ing.

I got my grades for last semester and they’re not bad considering it was the first full semester I worked during, but I got a B in Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers and Art History II, and an A in Introduction to Biology (with my time consuming lab grade smushed in) and Introduction to Mythology. The sucky part is that I was .78% away from an A in Art History, not even a whole percent. Oh well, I thought I was going to fail Art History and I was worried about my Mathematics and Bio finals, so it’s all good.

I took a slight break from the internet over the holidays to spend time my family and friends. Thankfully, the family didn’t fight as much as I thought. All my Christmases were great and my New Years was awesome too.

I decided to finish the season one Dexter character vid if it killed me. When I finish, I’ll slowly go through my backlog of lj posts, emails, messages, etcetera, so hopefully I’ll be caught up soon so to speak. I don’t have much of the vid left either; just some tinkering, beta-ing, and then saving. It’s crazy and weird, so I’m not sure it will go over well. I’ll have a rough cut soon if anyone wants to check it out and give me their opinion...

I’m behind on feedback because I don’t watch vids while I vid, but I do have a rec from before I went into hibernation:

VID REC: [info]bradcpu’s My Little Drum - A House vid with amazing music, just the right touch of Christmas, sadness, happiness... It has a nice flow and great clip connections, overlays, and it takes the whole first season and presents it beautifully.

Changed my layout ([info]kiki_miserychic) to the closest thing I will ever get to a Christmas-y layout. Also, new userpic, which is funny because it’s true.

I turned in my Introduction to Mythology final this morning. It was supposed to a simple 3 page report on Gilgamesh, but it turned into an 8 page report with the last 5 about Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oops. I also took my Math for Elementary School Teachers’ final today, so I only have Biology and Art History finals left.

I also succumbed and got an imeem account, so be my friend. :)
