I made a Whiskey vidlet, The Night, with the prompts: Dollhouse, epitaph one, The Night by Morphine for the Itty-Bitty Viddy Ficcy Thon.

VID RECS:
[info]danegen's Slobo Babe (Lesbian Vampire Killers) - Has me LOLZ-ing forever. The movie is complete crack and it's well used in the vid with good timing.

[info]giandujakiss's A Charming Man (Supernatural) - Excellent song choice, interesting lyrical interpretation coupled with brillant musicality in the visuals.

[info]newkidfan's Human & Monster (Supernatural) - A beautifully subdued pair of companion vidlets that feel bittersweet and sad.

FIC REC:
[info]serrico's Primogeniture is a Supernatural fic of Claire, Castiel's vessel's daughter, set post-Rapture that hurts in a good way.

Lastly, I've become a resident of Zombieland by zombifying myself.

I started back at college and this is my last semester before I graduate with my Bachelor's Degree (yay accomplishment). It pretty much means the only thing I'm going to be doing for a while is going to classes and student teaching.

I've been meaning to make a post about [info]vid_commentary, but never actually did it. I posted commentary for [info]charmax's multifandom (Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: Sarah Connor, Terminator movies) vid, Unnatural Selection. Also, [info]thuviaptarth posted commentary for my Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles vid, Ding! Dong!

I'm considering participating in Challenge 2: Combined Vidder & Viewer, but I can't figure out what I want to do for it. The idea is a comparison of point of view from creator and audience on a vid, which sounds like it could be incredible and enlightening.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes and the super cute virtual gifts ([info]nursedarry, [info]bop_radar, [info]talitha78, and [info]sol_se).

From the LEVERAGE #205 "The Three Days of the Hunter Job" Post-game from John Rogers, a screenwriter for the show:

@619: I personally HATE fanfic so I was wondering..... 1)How do YOU feel about fan fiction? 2)Does it irk you that so many people "borrow" your characters and use them in their own crappy stories? 3)Do you think of fanfic as a form of flattery? 4)Do the other writers and the actors feel the same way?

1.) I think fanfic is the sign of a healthy show. Here's what it boils down to: you're telling me that in today's crowded media space, our show made someone love it so much they take time out of their own life to talk about it? Holy. Crap.

To be fair, I have a somewhat different attitude toward media/fans than most people. I think what TV/corporate media had wrong for a long time was how they understood the idea of a "water cooler show." They saw it as making the audience talk about their show, on their terms. So any fan-created media is them losing control of their material. I see this more as the natural evolution of culture in a shared digital age. I will be blunt -- other than the satisfaction of our own creative urges (and all that entails: the quest for perfection, artistry, craft, etc), our job in media is to give you stuff to talk about in your conversations, to integrate into your social circle in whatever way you see fit. I doubt that's TNT's official stance, btw, but they are much cooler about this stuff than most companies.

2.) As far as "borrowing" our characters -- to paraphrase Alan Moore, they didn't go anywhere. There they are, sitting right up on the shelf. Waiting for us to let them loose again. Besides, how many people read a fanfic story? A couple hundred, tops? We have, on average 3.5 million viewers, well into the 4 million range when you get the DVR numbers in. I just don't see someone taking control of our Ideaspace through sheer force of Slashfic.

Sure, a lot of fanfic is crap. Of course it's crap. It's written by people who are not professional writers. If I paint, what I paint is crap. Does that mean I should give up painting and displaying stuff in my neighborhood art show?

3.) Is fanfic flattery? Again, depends on how you define flattery. If someone's writing fanfic with intention of currying favor for some ... er, frankly unguessable benefit, then they're really engaged in an exercise in futility. If you mean flattery as in: it's flattering to think someone is so entertained by our work that it inspires them to talk about it and create around it, then aces.

4.) Most writers and actors don't feel this way. Some, including writers I both like personally and greatly admire, hate the idea of fanfic.

Look, end of day, you should always be trying to create your own material. But fanfic, etc, is a different process than original creation -- which I think is the source of a lot of the controversy.

People who do original creations assume the fan is taking some sort of unearned ownership, somehow implying their act is the same/as difficult as the original act of creation. Which, of course, tees them off (doesn't tee me off, but I'm a very relaxed and often drunk guy).

And some fanfic humans are under the impression that creating fanfic is the same creative process as creating original material -- and are sometimes frustrated that they're not accorded the same respect as the original creators. That's also wrong. Fanfic to me is spiritually much closer to the fan-created music videos.

The basic rule I follow here is one I learned in stand-up comedy: Always punch UP. I am a relatively successful typing human whose words are physically produced using millions of dollars and is distributed nationally by a massive billion dollar corporation to millions of people. Exactly how is a free web page with a 1000 word story about Eliot and Hardison fighting a trans-dimensional incursion of Elves hurting my brand, exactly?

Tell you what -- if some fanfic writer is so good they manage to amass a million-person audience with their web-distributed free stories using my characters, I am going to consider that evolution in action and hire that bastard. Or, at the very least, urge them to go create their own show. But odds are it ain't gonna happen. And that's okay. We write for different reasons.

Wow, that response could be its own blog post. I may break it out later, and shine it a bit.

National Organization for Marriage is throwing “Rhode Island’s First Annual” Celebrate Marriage & Family Day this coming Sunday 16th...

"The highlight of the Sunday afternoon event will be an opportunity for married couples to renew their vows together at a beautiful waterfront setting. This is a great opportunity to take a stand for marriage as it was created: between a man and a woman. Our goal is to esteem marriage to its proper place in society and make a statement that Rhode Islanders believe strongly in this cherished institution."

One of the sponsors of the event is Tim Horton's. Why is TIM Freaking HORTON'S is supporting something like this?

“If you pick me a flower, I’ll wear it in my hair. I’ll stash little notes for you where you least expect them. I don’t have many firsts left.. but I’d like someone who I could offer all of my lasts. We’ll make history together. I’ll wait for you even if you’re late – and I won’t complain about it. Kindness to cashiers, valets, waiters and maddeningly slow postal clerks who would try the patience of Gandhi is a must. I will feel safe and most at peace in your arms. When you’re counting aloud, I will try and mess you up. I find you magically delicious. I will let you be right when it doesn’t really matter. I’ll giggle when you show off and I know it’s just for me. I’ll hold your coffee while you drive. I can build a fire without burning the house down. If you wash the car with me – I promise to wear a white t-shirt for you. I‘ll hide around corners and try to scare you in the middle of the night.. of course, I’ll end up scaring myself and you’ll have to calm me down. I can change a flat tire and my own oil. It’s the simple things you do that make me swoon the most. I love it when you sing to me. I’ll make you mickey mouse pancakes. Sleeping in has a whole new meaning now that we’re doing it together. I’ll cover you up and kiss your forehead when you fall asleep watching tv. I won’t swear around your family or make you wear silly sweaters at my family’s during Christmas. I’ll grant you three wishes. I’ll make you laugh. I’ll stare in wonder with you at that hot chick with the great rack. I will marvel at your strength. I’ll take care of you when you’re sick. I give a kick ass massage. I think it’s hot when you come home all dirty from playing or working hard. My heart will skip every time you walk through the door. My kisses will take your breath away – seriously. I’ll giggle if you leave your socks on in bed. My quirks and oddities have been deemed ‘adorable’ and I will love you more everyday for all of yours. I’ll hold you when you need it. I will give you space when you need it. I will let you be you. You’ll sleep better when I’m next to you. I’ll thank you every time you open a door for me. I’ll never give you shit in front of your friends. I won’t ever let you leave for work in the morning without your lunch and a passionate kiss. We can watch your movie first. I’ll clean the house perfectly every time your mom comes by. I like horror movies only when you’re with me and only as long as you hold me close. I don’t litter. I love when you pull me down to sit on your lap. I love it when you lay your head on my chest in bed. I can be ready (shower and all) in half an hour. I’ll look cute as hell in your shirt in the morning. I can balance a checkbook. I can never turn down a challenge. I’ll fit perfectly in your arms. I’ll understand if you get jealous – and do my best to show you that you have no reason. Hand-written love notes will get you laid every time. I can totally keep a secret. I’m pretty damn funny and will do anything to make you laugh. You will always look hot to me in the morning. I think it’s cute when you eat off my plate. When you’re sleeping, I’ll try to stay quiet. I’ll call when I say I will. Treat me like a woman and I’ll treat you like a man. To clarify: I’m not looking for a savior, a fix-up project, or anything of that sort. I’m looking for a man who quite simply adds something extraordinary and special to my life. And I to him. A fair exchange, an amazing mind, body and soul connection and a place to build something magnificent.”

Do you want to see something cool?

The BAMF [info]bradcpu has started creating monthly vidder profiles featuring an audio interview with the vidder over excerpts from his or her vids. I'm the August Vidder Profile, so watch if it so pleases you. I discuss my frequent use of sexual or violent source material, my take on vidding as an art form, my concepts, my influences and more. After watching the profile I realized how much a giggle when I talk. Weird.

In conclusion, I am a Disney Princess.

I read on TMZ that Jeffrey Donovan (Michael Weston on Burn Notice) was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Sunday and my first thought was, "he didn't twitter that."

My neighbor's dog got out through a giant hole in their fence and the mail lady brought him to me, so I have a furry little ball of "OMGZIWANTATTENTION" licking at my fingers while I try to type. He's cute, but I don't like small dogs.

I've been cooking and baking a lot lately. I mean more than never when I say a lot. I made bacon and cheese stuffed beer burgers this weekend, which turned out well. I made ice cream cone cupcakes to take to a party too and they turned out freaking awesome.

I've also been making my own cold-brewed coffee, which is so good that I think I might like it more than Starbucks. I know, I know, blasphemy, but it's true.

I've been using twitter instead of LJ for little things I find interesting. I used to make posts about little things, but now they're all on my twitter and never make it to LJ. This is probably a good thing because it spares everyone my squeeing over Eliza Dushku, Zachary Quinto, and Olivia Wilde; linking to pretty photographs; laughing about how I set off the smoke alarm baking; and mourning having deleted the Torchwood Children of Earth miniseries only to get a vid idea 3 days later. Link to my twitter.

VID RECS:
[info]newkidfan's Blood Makes Noise (Lost) - A gorgeous layering and coloring that is lush and full with jumpcut editing and wavering images. The interesting framing choices feel like the zeroing in on a microscope that amps up the intensity and tension along with the effects. It doesn't hurt that I gave her the musical prompt because I've wanted to see this song vidded well to Lost for as long as the show has been on the air.

[info]danegen's Down by the Water (Southland) - I've never watched Southland, but that didn't matter because I was able to plug into the more emotional aspect of the vid. I know I'm missing the depth and understanding that would come with knowing the source, but the vid is still terrific in the use of imagery. It feels like a great study of objects and how people can become objects in that sense. I think my favorite aspect is how a woman's dead body is transformed into a landscape.

WashingTones' Dr. House is a wicked cool music video that uses footage of the band performing and source footage from the show, House, too. The end result is an engaging music video that has me bopping around and singing the chorus in the shower.

Civilization by Marco Brambilla

"Civilization, a video mural created for the new Standard hotel in New York City, depicts a journey from hell to heaven interpreted through modern film language using computer-enhanced found footage. This epic video mural contains over 300 individual channels of looped video blended into a multi-layered seamless tableau of interconnecting images that illustrate a contemporary, satirical take on the concepts of Heaven and Hell."

I was going to make a huge post about my weekend, my job, and live in general, but I don't feel like it, so I'm doing this instead.

Ganked from [info]beerbad:
01. Anyone who looks at this entry has to post this meme and their current wallpaper at their LiveJournal.
02. Explain in five sentences why you're using that wallpaper.
03. Don't change your wallpaper before doing this. The point is to see what you had on.

It's the beautiful wallpaper that [info]millylicious made for me. This is the longest I've ever had the same desktop. It's Summer Glau as Cameron from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It uses the lyrics to my Cameron vid idea, which adds to love and squee. I don't see myself changing it for a long, long, long time because it's mine, mine, mine.

ETA: Regina Spektor and Fiest had a musical baby, Yael Naim. I can't stop listening to her music.

I paid off a couple more hospital bills that came in. It's getting annoying because they bill everything separately. There isn't one bill, but 20 bills for individual things like sterile gauze, doctor's time, the room, transport, aftercare nurse's time, bandage tape, and so on. I decided to go all in and pay off my car completely before I have no money left. I'm not sure it was the smartest thing, but at least my car is paid off and it's mine, so I don't have to worry about having no money left after hospital bills. This is the poorest I've been since I was 7 years old and my great-uncle opened a CD account in my name. (Side note: that was college money that my dad gambled away, yay!)

I had to take the semester off of school, which has turned out to be a better and better choice as time goes on. I've been working more, so I have more money than I did when I could only work on the weekends. Sadly, that money has gone to pay ridiculous hospital bills. Going back to how shitty my dad is, he promised to pay what hospital bills were left after insurance. Now that I'm not dying and the bills have started coming in, he's not paying.

I went to breakfast with my grandparents this morning and studied a bit while drinking coffee. I have my forth and final PRAXIS teaching licensure and certification exam on Saturday. I went overboard studying this week. I'd planned to study over two weeks and be confident and ready by Thursday, using Friday for overall review. I finished my outline and information gathering far sooner and I studied far more than I'd planned. It's Monday and I feel like I could take the test right now. I suppose that's a good thing though.

I received the results from the one I took in March too. I got a 191 out of 200, which is quite good considering the average is like 170 or so.

I don't know if I've ever publicly declared it, but my dream for the last half of Supernatural season five is for it to be the apocalypse. Not the usual last minute prevention, but actual end of the world and hell on Earth for the couple episodes. So reading this about an episode of Dollhouse makes my apocalypse-loving self fill with glee. I've always wanted to see a series go there. Buffy was always able to save the day, Angel was able to hold it back, Terminator comes close with flashbacks, and BSG was all about the end of the world technically. I want to see the WORLD END... on a tv series, then watch the character deal with living in a post-apocalyptic world.

I WANT TO GO TO THERE.
